I grew up baking and making festive treats around the kitchen table with my mom for the holidays. Almost everything under the sun that was chocolate and sweet, making treats with my mom brought Christmastime to life. From homemade fudge that took over the whole kitchen island, to daily homemade chocolate chip cookies, to my all-time holiday favorite, chocolate-dipped pretzels.
Our neighbors would come by and ring the doorbell, dropping freshly baked loaves of all types of bread - and we'd always end up with a large jar of a friend's homemade hot cocoa and several versions of cheese straws (anyone else?!). We'd deliver tins of mom's homemade fudge to what seemed like everyone we knew.
The chocolate covered pretzels were probably my favorite of all the treats (save the homemade loaves of bread, hello). It's probably the crunchy-salty-sweet combo that made for fun snacking after school. We'd often roll the chocolate-dipped pretzels in candy, mostly peppermint.
This year, I wanted to bring this nostalgia back to life through our chocolate bars.
And to be honest, my peppermint-loving grandmother Norma Sue has been begging me for six years to make a peppermint bar. I hope this one meets her high standards. This one's for you, Mammaw.
Cheers to chocolate,
